Music Ministry
One of the most ancient, and most profound, responses that people have when they encounter God is the offering of worship. To "worship" is simply to declare worth, and there is nothing and no one more valuable than God. The purpose and the privilege of the Music Ministry is to lead and guide people into expressing worship, and in so doing to help them draw closer to God and to their fellow worshiping Christians.
There are a number of misconceptions that people tend to have about worship. First, worship isn't just about music (despite the name of the ministry). On a Sunday morning, you'll see worship expressed in many ways, including music, Bible reading, prayer, giving, and preaching. During the week, it's expressed in such actions as more prayer, serving our neighbors, and personal devotions. In fact, the call of the Bible is that all of one's life is to be a form of worship. What happens on Sunday is only a more overt expression of that lifestyle of worship.
Another problematic misconception is that worship, at least in the church service, is strictly for professionals. Worship is a community event in the fullest sense of the term. Not only is everyone supposed to be involved, but the Holy Spirit gives every Christian gifts to be used in worship, in effect making everyone a 'professional' in the niche of their gifting. This has been a hallmark of our worship for a long time, but we are in the process of making it moreso through the Community Worship Project, which I would strongly encourage everyone in the church to participate in.
Finally, some people think time matters to the quality of worship, so that either newer or older forms and styles are the best. This is a pitfall we try to avoid. Christianity has a rich and diverse history of worship, and we try to take full advantage of both modern and not-so-modern insights. If you join us for worship, be prepared a little of everything.
Worship is as amazing thing, and it's a great privilege to help people get into it. I hope you'll join us, and participate!
